At some point in their lives, Ashley's parents left Spain and moved to the USA. They tried really hard to assimilate to the US culture. Because of that, Ashley never learnt to speak Spanish. ("The Day Before...")
At some point during Ashley's late teenage years, her father died of unknown reasons. Afterwards, Ashley was "kind of a mess" and mad at the world. ("Friday Night Dinner")
